About Me

I grew up in beautiful upstate New York in a home my parents built. As the youngest of three children, I was fortunate to grow up in a household where three generations lived under one roof. It was there that my love and compassion for seniors first took root.

My grandmother, my mother's mother, lived with us, and some of my fondest childhood memories are of the time we spent together. I loved helping her and simply being by her side. As her health declined, our family did everything we could to care for her at home. Eventually, we had to make the difficult decision to move her into a nursing home.

I still remember walking through those halls and seeing so many residents sitting quietly in wheelchairs. Some would ask if I could sit and visit with them. Before long, those once-strange faces became friends.

While I always looked forward to seeing my grandmother's smile when we entered her room, I also found myself eager to visit the other residents who brightened when they saw me. Those conversations taught me that sometimes the greatest gift you can give someone is simply your time.

As I grew older, I continued looking after older neighbors, checking in on them and helping whenever I could. Later, I worked in long-term care, where I gained an even deeper understanding of the joys and challenges many seniors face. I met residents whose families visited often and others who rarely, if ever, had visitors. I also learned an important lesson: caring for seniors requires not only skill but genuine compassion. Some people are truly called to this work.

One project especially close to my heart has been organizing donation drives to collect tennis balls for walkers. Many people are surprised to learn that something as simple as tennis balls—which make walkers safer and easier to use—are not provided free to residents in rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, or long-term care facilities. If someone needs them, they or their family must purchase them.

It may seem like a small thing, but small acts of kindness can make a big difference.

I do this because I genuinely care. My hope is to make each day a little easier for someone, to bring comfort, encouragement, and a smile when it's needed most. I want every senior I meet to know they are valued, they are not alone, and that serving them is where my heart truly belongs.

Sincerely,

Nina Powers
